The scattered nature of Six Sigma Team members is very common in the service sector, and also has its place within a few other industries.
As such, the job roles of the black belts and the champions become much harder because they have to get creative in team management to ensure that the projects are always successful.
One of the first and most obvious ways of managing your randomly located Six Sigma Team is to utilize all the technology that you can. With all of the online meeting programs, video chat capabilities, and other tools that are available, there is no shortage of ways for team members to communicate with one another from around the world.
Teleconferences and online meetings will allow the Six Sigma Process to operate more smoothly, because the team can still maintain its group dynamic by utilizing these tools for communication. Then, everyone still feels like they are involved and are a valuable asset to the team, which always facilitates a better chance of success for Six Sigma Projects.
It’s amazing how there have been so many different advantages created to allow this to happen. In previous years, team members would’ve had to travel long distances and spend many weeks or even months away from their homes and families in order to be part of a process improvement team.
Not only was this a lot of work for Six Sigma Projects of decades past, but it was also very expensive. All of the traveling expenses add up over time, and can make Six Sigma Projects much less affordable than they might have been otherwise.
One advantage of all the technology that we have today is that you can afford to find the best team members available no matter where they are the world. Thanks to the Internet and all of the communications tools that we have, you can focus more on selecting the best team members rather than selecting the accessible ones.
Group dynamics are always going to be an essential part of successful Six Sigma Projects. However, the team doesn’t need to be physically together in order to encourage proper group dynamics and teamwork.
As team manager, it is your job to show them the options that they have for communication and facilitating the project between members who are in different locations.
Make sure that they use these tools to the best of their abilities so that the Six Sigma Team can complete their projects in a timely and efficient manner.
