Some time ago there was a moving feature on “Australian Story” (ABC TV) about the Howard family; not our famous political Howard family, but the lesser known ‘fireworks’ Howards.
Within the fireworks industry, this family are internationally respected. They’ve been creating and presenting public fireworks shows for four generations.
Despite all this success, two brothers from the third generation experienced a major disagreement. Their relationship was then fraught with conflict. Devastated, the older brother, Sid, left the family business.
From that moment, his father ceased all communication. With nothing resolved and no other expertise, Sid started his own fireworks business in direct competition with his brother. No doubt, this added to the friction and intolerance.
Sadly, their father died before anything was resolved. The ongoing frustration prompted many cheerless experiences for this family, privately and professionally. Yet, as older men, they couldn’t remember the original cause. So much time, effort, money, and pain was lost to something that was no longer relevant.
Have you experienced the shock and disempowerment from an abusive attack? Have you been aware of abusing someone else (however justified you might have felt)?
We have all been caught up in the frustrations of communication malfunction. These situations can be as mild as feeling ‘hot under the collar’ to explosive reactions that have devastating, seemingly irreparable consequences.
Be reassured that relationships don’t have to be reduced to ashes, or even get to this point. Those small sparks of conflict can be extinguished before too much damage is done.
In the workplace, relationship frustration costs the business money:
* People stop talking
* People stop working together
* They stop sharing
* They take days off
* They try to avoid each other
* They lose their innovation and motivation
* They can even resort to sabotage
The list can go on forever. Don’t let this happen in your business.
It can be easy to douse those frustrations if you seek assistance.
