When it comes to a career, we are all running forward at break neck speed. What we have to remember though is it is not a sprint to the finish line – it is a long journey that will take us many years of perseverance and hard but hopefully satisfying work.
You don’t want to burn out and leave yourself exhausted now do you? Pacing ourselves, learning to get the most out of who we are and how we best work as an individual takes focus and self-knowledge.
How do we start to get the most out of our day then? We start by getting organized and managing our time better in order to get more out the day we have, instead of just extending it into the wee hours and playing catch-up the next day.
The best place to start is your workspace – either the desk at your office or your home environment. Do any of the following apply to you?
• You have odd, scraps of paper with hastily, half-scribbled messages, some from yesterday?
• Notices on the cork board or in your in-tray from a week ago and yet to be signed off?
• Post-it notes around the monitor screen or computer?
• Flashing messages on the answer phone from people who “have tried all week to get through to you but there’s never an answer!”
• You keep hearing that ‘dink’ sound you get when a new email arrives and needs your attention but you ignore it for now?
• There’s’ a couple of letters that need replying to 0r forwarding still in your in-tray.
The desk is the perfect place to begin your new time management disciplines. It is the hub of your working world, the headquarters and epicentre of the organised chaos that exists there. If it is a mess it is only common sense that you will inevitably spend more time looking for information within that mess. This is a waste of time!
Time management techniques can provide you with ways to arrange your desktop, so that you maximise your efficiency and attention. Everything from generating a “keeper” pile for important bits of paper to filing regimes and strategies like not writing too much on small pieces of paper and sticking them everywhere. Small notes tend to lose the ability to get us to notice them after a little while and can be sadly neglected.
Whether you a home business worker or an office worker, taking a whole-hearted approach to managing our time successfully can significantly add to productivity in our careers and satisfaction in our lives and is well worth trying.
