The desired outcome of training is generally to increase the level of participants’ knowledge or skills. To do that effectively, trainer can employ many training aids.

Here’s a rundown of the key training aids and their benefits:

PROPS AND VISUALS

* Can generate interest and attention
* Can help explain complex or statistical information
* Can convey something that can’t be told by words alone
* Can emphasize key points
* Should help the audience understand or remember a point
* Should complement, not be your presentation

NOTEBOOKS

* Can give participants a guide to follow
* Can supplement the verbal delivery with a visual reinforcement
* Can serve as a take-away for future reference
* Can include additional material not covered in the training session
* Should contain only relevant information
* Should be laid out in an attractive, easy-to-read style
* Should not be overloaded with copies of articles that are too long and hard to read

FILM/VIDEO

* Can be entertaining and engaging while being informative
* Can be an effective catalyst for discussion

HANDOUTS

* Can provide supplemental information to reinforce certain points
* Can serve as the basis for exercises, games, case studies, or role plays
* Should be easy to read and understand

Should be passed out with the following considerations:

Before the presentation:

* Advantage – gives participants the chance to review beforehand
* Disadvantage – may “give away” something you don’t want to reveal yet

During the presentation:

* Advantage – gives participants something new to focus on
* Disadvantage -participants may focus on the handout instead of the trainer’s instruction, often reading ahead and missing key points

After the presentation:

* Advantage – can be a great summary to take away for future reference
* Disadvantage – many people will never refer to something that’s been given out after the presentation is over
