Organisations have been increasingly viewed with suspicion because of the climate over the past few years that has suffered the Enron collapse and now the recession which is causing jobs to be lost at all levels.

It’s no wonder when an employee comes to work at the moment they wonder if their days are numbered. What is workplace trust?

In this environment frontline management need to provide the leadership that enables their team to feel secure in their role. This will allow individuals to perform to their best ability.

Part of feeling secure is trust within the workplace. A bit like trust with friends we know if we’ve had a bad day we can sit down together, have a cuppa and let out our troubles and then solve them together.

Workplace trust is also about open lines of communication. Often senior leaders are in the loop with the financial performance of a business, but not necessarily the frontline employees, who are ironically out their on the ground driving the performance.

4 ways to build trust

Open communication is easier said than done. Here are some tips to help you get started:

1. Frontline leaders need to communicate the big picture with their team, so each team member can see how their role contributes to the combined effort.

2. Frontline leaders can communicate key issues with the team, so they have a better understanding of where their focus needs to be on a daily basis.

3. Understanding the numbers of a business isn’t difficult and is a skill that is easily taught to your employees. Taking an interest in the overall picture drives morale and performance.

4. Operate on a no-surprises platform. Communicate where your business is at and where you’re going. When times get tough your employees can see where extra performance is required or jobs will be lost.

Trust equals engaged employees

Empower your employees.

For each individual to understand the business direction, how it is faring and what their contribution means is empowering. Empowered employees trust their organisation. Empowered employees are engaged employees. And, empowered employees maximise business performance. With a high level of morale amongst employees as individuals and teams, the overall performance of the business increases.

Average performance can grow to become high performance. Frontline leaders providing open communication from the top down is a key part of making this happen.
