Call Center Cafe and Call Center Best Practices bring you this article on team building by Debbie Norris.

In business, there is a lot of emphasis placed on individual accomplishments. Companies choose an employee of the month, recognize the top seller for their efforts, and pay commissions or bonuses to those who meet personal quotas.

While this can provide great results in the short term, a much more effective approach to increasing the productivity of your company is to focus more on leadership and team building than on personal productivity.

The team approach serves several different purposes in a work setting. One of the most important effects of developing a team approach is the sense of responsibility to the others on the team and to the company.

The idea that “when one succeeds, all succeed and when one fails, all fail” can be a serious motivating factor. The competitive edge is taken away and people work together toward a common goal.

Those who work as a team also tend to have a better morale. When everyone is pulling their own weight and picking up the slack for those who are having problems, there is a sense of camaraderie that takes over.

Employees who work in an organization with a high morale level are naturally more productive and effective at their jobs.

In order for this approach to work, those who will be taking the leadership positions need to be chosen carefully. They must have the right qualities for leadership and the desire to be a motivator.

Sometimes, you may have to make quick changes when instituting a change to a team approach, as leaders may emerge as projects begin to come together. Keep your eye on who seems to be taking charge and organizing things from the beginning.

Top performers are often born leaders so these many be the key players in your efforts to change your company’s focus over to leadership and team building.

These individuals are often competitive in nature, so you will have to redirect their focus from personal productivity to building the best and most productive team.

It may take a bit of effort and reconstruction of your business approach, but the long term effects will be worth the effort down the road.
